Every Anus is a Portal/Harmless Dancing with Hana van der Kolk
About the workshop:
I've been moving with a curiosity about energetic sphincters and actual sphincters in the body, with a vested interest in the anus as a very real, fleshy site of de-shaming and care-full mediation between inner and outer. So, we'll move through breathing, awareness and movement practice centered around this sphincter work, which seems to lend itself to at once subtle, vulnerable, bold, and deeply pleasure-filled moving. A sweaty workout time will tread between aerobics absurdity, gender fuckery, bodily conundrums, communal folk dance, and mindful movement. Some group inquiry/practice will place intimacy with self, other, and surroundings and an embodied culture of harmlessness and care at the center of a shared value system for working. Text, coming from radical, contemplative feminisms and spirituality studies will dance with our dancing (i.e. we'll read a bit together). We'll also speak with one another and perhaps write a bit. This workshop is open to all bodies and levels of experience with movement/dance/performance/contemplative practice.

Hana van der Kolk is a Troy, NY-based artist, dancer, performer, educator, activist and facilitator of community events and spaces. They are currently pursuing the practice-based PhD in Art at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, where they are researching creative, body-centered practices towards more interconnected and livable futures. This research takes the form of events, ritual, performances, videos, material remnants, texts, and curricula for radical, embodied approaches to restoration and relinquishment in the face of untenable pasts and terrifying futures. Hana received an MFA in Dance from UCLA in 2008 and has performed internationally. They have been on the art/dance/performance faculty of Williams College, Marlboro College, and the School for New Dance Development, and have guest taught at numerous universities, healing and community centers, and DIY spaces throughout the U.S. and Europe. Hana often teaches under the name radial diamond kinetics, offers personalized dream, counseling, and sexual healing sessions for individuals, contributes heavily to the workings of the community bike shop Troy Bike Rescue and is engaged in an ongoing collaboration with Tomislav Feller, which took the form of the ceremony performance nothingnessXXX in Amsterdam and Zagreb in 2018.
